How Far Can Geographic Information Systems Go
GIS is a scientific integration method to create a visualized academic world. This paper discusses the power of GIS both in research method and Sociological theories. We develop a new method called ‘SPSS-Cluster-GIS’ model. There are several findings. First, GIS researcher creates digital social maps to corporate quantitative method (SPSS) into GIS’ territory and eliminates the gap between traditional quantitative and qualitative methods. Second, GIS could capture temporal dimension of social world by correct division of database and good exercise of spatial data. Third, every GIS researcher is a Storyteller for explaining the ‘story’ behind maps. Fourth, as a common base of thought, GIS is related to some dimension of Sociological theories, such as local knowledge, media, and deconstruct.
